THE HIVE... A HUB OF CREATIVITY

http://www.thehivemanchester.co.uk/latest-news/the-hive-a-hub-of-creativity

Twelve fine art students from Manchester Metropolitan University recently exhibited their mid-semester work over five days at The Hive's creative office space in Manchester. Since the very beginning of their course, all twelve talented artists have invested heavily in their respective media, including painting, photography, sculpture, printing, drawing and video.Frances Blythe exhibited her digital print work, “The photographs form part of a series in which the subjects are asked to engage in a performative activity that absorbs their attention, in this case singing.” Says Frances. Clara Casian featured her Monitor Installation, Clara said of her work: “The monitor installation channels the relationship between the given distribution of image on a mediated context and the distorted representation of sound and image on a second-layered process which offers alternatives of representation and where the source of the sound becomes the object.” Sarah Redfern also exhibited in the office space at The Hive, she said: “The works I’ve shown deal with things in the world that are almost nothing, that perhaps were once full of purpose or intent, from which they have been relieved. The jar stopper, seemingly nothing in its isolation, filled with water to its absolute capacity, becomes itself the receptacle, independent from its counterpart. Its supporting shelf, sized exactly for its object, somehow belongs to only it, allowing it a place where its water completes it. The other work I have shown uses small stones, once part of the landscape, which will continue to reduce until they are nothing. Bulging from a paper bag, slumped and almost splitting their container, they assume an almost perfect form, temporarily echoing their original state, whilst never being anything other than what they are.”The exhibition included many additional works from artists, Maire Byrne-Gascon, Tiago Duarte, Evi Grigoropoulou, Judith Hill, Victoria Mykytiuk, Jo McGonigal, Pitikasem Nilavongse, Eileen O Rourke and Hannah Wiles.Oliver Butler, project director at The Hive's workspace in Manchester said: “We have a number of exhibitions and events planned at The Hive in the coming weeks. We recently featured the ‘Future Everything’ exhibition, which was fantastic, and we were really pleased to be able to offer the MMU students an exhibition space for their most recent work, it’s what The Hive is all about.”

Green Office Week: 26th - 30th April, 2010

http://www.thehivemanchester.co.uk/latest-news/green-office-week-26th-30th-april-2010

Many offices around the UK will be supporting Green Office Week this month, which runs from the 26th to the 30th of April, and offers UK businesses the chance to find out more about running a sustainable, environmentally friendly workplace. According to a survey conducted in January 2010, over a third of office workers believe there is nothing stopping them making eco-friendly changes to their working environment, yet despite this fact, many still choose not to. Green Office Week therefore aims to educate and inspire office managers and employees to make the necessary changes to their workplaces to make them more sustainable and energy efficient, increasing environmental awareness in the process. Anyone can join in; simply register at the Green Office Week website and you'll receive a resource pack and access to a huge range of online tools designed to help you make your office as environmentally friendly as possible. A more eco-friendly office environment isn't just great for the environment, it also has the potential to cut down on your company's outgoings, in the form of energy bills. Take The Hive for example, a building designed to be as sustainable as possible with green living roofs, low water usage, energy efficient lighting and passive ventilation. The Hive has already achieved a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 'Excellent', and as far as eco-friendly offices go, is a true model for the future. To find out more about renting office space, retail units or design studios at The Hive, contact the sales and marketing team on 0161 236 1878 or e-mail us.

http://www.thehivemanchester.co.uk/latest-news/argent-and-manchester-city-council-complete-the-hive

Argent and Manchester City Council have announced the practical completion of their joint venture development, The Hive, located in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The landmark building provides circa 80,000 sq ft of cutting edge creative office space and workspace in Manchester, and is a new hub for business in this unique part of the city. Located on Stevenson Square, The Hive is contemporary and creative office space that appeals to a range of industries. Argent created The Hive to tap into the inspirational spirit of the Northern Quarter, helping to continue the ongoing regeneration, and setting a new standard for future developments in the area. The creative office space is designed by the HKR Architects Manchester, it features flexible, modern and relaxed workspace. The stunning design has raised the bar for sustainable innovation by using the latest in green technology, an important component of modern business. The building has received a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for its use of green planting on the rooftops, natural ventilation and energy efficient service systems. The building has also received a grade ‘B’ energy performance rating and with only one building in the UK having received an ‘A’ rating, this is further evidence of The Hive’s significant range of green credentials for the office space. The Hive was constructed by Tameside-based Bardsley Construction, a £70m turnover multi-disciplinary business and the leading Partnering constructor in the North West of England with almost 80 per cent of its contract workload secured from repeat clients. The Arts Council England and events venue specialist thestudio, have both taken creative office space at the building. This means that 40% of The Hive is now let, with encouraging interest in the remaining workspace. Oliver Butler, project manager at Argent has worked closely with the project since its inception in 2007. “Seeing the finished product marks an incredible journey for all those involved in the delivery of this fantastic development. The vision was to create a landmark building for the Northern Quarter, and to help enhance the community with a great new facility. We are confident that The Hive will continue to attract a diverse range of businesses and generate further investment into this part of the City.”Wayne Bardsley, chairman of Bardsley Construction, said: “We were obviously delighted to create such an innovative and striking building that epitomises the ongoing transformation of Manchester as a city and the Northern Quarter in particular.“The Hive is a vision of the future of construction and the significantly reduced environmental impact it has on the city is something to aspire to with all future building projects.”For more information about The Hive's creative office space and workspace in Manchester, contact Oliver Butler on 0161 236 1878.

Manchester Office Space Market Bounces Back

http://www.thehivemanchester.co.uk/latest-news/manchester-office-space-market-bounces-back

According to figures published on the Official Space website, the office space market in Manchester showed signs of significant improvement in the last quarter of 2009. The study mentioned in the report, conducted by commercial property consultant DTZ, demonstrated that 332,000 sq. ft. of office space was leased in the last three months of 2009, much of it by Manchester City Council. The council leased 145,000 sq ft of space in Ask Developments' First Street, 26,000 sq ft in Eliot House on Deansgate (the site of Manchester's new temporary library, intended for use during Central Library's refurbishment) and 9,300 sq ft on Universal Square in Ardwick. As the UK slowly emerges from the global recession, these figures are extremely encouraging for the North West office space market. New developments like The Hive, targeted at businesses operating in creative industries such as online marketing, independent retail and design, which were largely unaffected by the economic downturn, look likely to flourish. The Hive offers Manchester creative businesses, retailers, artists and designers the opportunity to work in the city centre's thriving Northern Quarter, a hub for art, music and culture.Despite the encouraging figures published in DTZ's report, 2010 is likely to be another difficult year for UK businesses. Business owners are going to be looking for ways to save money on bills and network more efficiently with like-minded companies and individuals in their industry, both of which are key benefits of renting office space in The Hive, which places a sense of community and environmental responsibility at the forefront of its philosophy.

NEW HOME FOR CREATIVITY IS A HIVE OF ACTIVITY

http://www.thehivemanchester.co.uk/latest-news/new-home-for-creativity-is-a-hive-of-activity

The hoardings are up; the builders are doing the last touch ups and Argent’s The Hive scheme in Manchester’s Northern Quarter is positively buzzing with activity. The Hive will be opening its doors soon as the finishing line is in sight, and Manchester will be host to an alternative breed of contemporary offices and creative workspace. The 78,000 sq ft development is aimed at architects, fashionistas, photographers, PR, media, digital agencies and advertising agencies – in short, all creative industries looking for workspace in Manchester. It is focused around the heart of the vibrant and unique Northern Quarter area.In July 2008, The Arts Council announced that it would be relocating to The Hive, which means that 16,000 sq ft of this contemporary office space and creative workspace has already been snapped up. With this activity taking place at The Hive, Argent is optimistic that it will continue to act as a magnet for inward investment as more and more businesses relocate to the Manchester.Oliver Butler, Project Manager for Argent says: “It is fantastic to see such a lot going on at The Hive, the team has been working really hard on this project and our contemporary offices are almost ready to host some of Manchester's most creative talent in the industry. The Northern Quarter is viewed as an inspirational extension to the core of Manchester city centre, with its own personality and distinct sense of community. We were therefore very careful when developing the ideas for The Hive's offices and workspace, to ensure that we had a scheme that was in tune with the people who live and work in the Northern Quarter, and the buildings that surround it.”Situated in Stevenson Square, The Hive was designed by the Manchester office of international architecture and design practice HKR Architects to feature flexibility, sustainability and the latest technology. The Hive boast BEEAM Excellent certified green credentials which includes the highly sustainable green roof terrace and straightforward naturally ventilated space, it is also predicted that because of the design, service charges at The Hive's workspace should be around half those of conventional builds.Carly Grice lead architect from HKR Architects commented: “The team’s endeavors to create a sustainable building was recognised during MIPIM at the Future Projects Awards. We cannot wait to see ‘the Hive come alive’ as the landmark building in the heart of the city’s creative community.”

Manchester agency Dinosaur has teamed up again with property developer Argent to design and deliver a website for The Hive, a new office and work space for creative businesses in the new media and digital industries in Manchester. The two organisations have worked together for over five years producing branding, websites and literature for projects such as One Piccadilly Gardens, Piccadilly Place and The Hub Apartments.“We’ve always had a great relationship with Argent. So it was good to collaborate once again on their latest project.” enthused Dinosaur’s Creative Director, Mark Beaumont. “For me, any new development in the city should blend with the history of its surroundings. And as The Hive complements the Northern Quarter’s reputation as the creative hub of the city, Argent have once again proven that they’re sensitive to this. Our job was to simply mirror The Hive’s innovative, yet understated design ethos”. “Our restrained approach to the look and feel of the site, and the novel SEO friendly application used to bring the website to life without using flash, were just two simple ways that we achieved this”.Ready for completion in January 2010, The Hive comprises 78,000 sq ft of sustainable office space. Designed to attract creative organisations from small start up businesses to more established outfits, The Hive will be the perfect address for those looking to upgrade their current office environment.
